Adding and removing GST
To add GST, multiply the base price by the rate and add it on: ₹1,00,000 at 18% becomes ₹1,18,000. To remove GST from a price that already includes it, divide by (1 + rate), not subtract the rate: ₹1,18,000 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,00,000.
For a supply within one state the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST (or UTGST in a Union Territory). For a supply between states, or an import, the whole amount is IGST. The total tax is the same either way.
Most goods and services now fall in the 5% or 18% rate, with 40% on a short list of demerit and luxury items, 3% on gold and silver and 0.25% on rough diamonds. Use “Other” for any rate not listed.

Common questions
Why is removing 18% not the same as subtracting 18%?
Because 18% was charged on the base price, not on the total. The base is the total divided by 1.18, so GST is about 15.25% of the inclusive amount.
How do I know whether CGST+SGST or IGST applies?
It depends on the place of supply and where the supplier is located. Supplier and place of supply in the same state means CGST and SGST; different states means IGST.
Does this handle cess, TCS or reverse charge?
No. It covers the plain rate. Compensation cess, TCS and reverse charge need to be dealt with separately.
